Craters & Freighters Eastern Nebraska Crates Abe Lincoln's Chair

Craters & Freighters of Eastern Nebraska had the distinctive honor to assist the Library of Congress and the Union Pacific Museum to package, crate, and ship an important piece of American history earlier this week.  To help commemorate the 200th Birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the Library of Congress will be hosting a traveling exhibit beginning in Washington, DC.  Craters & Freighters of Eastern Nebraska was chosen to help design, package, and build a crate that would protect Lincoln's rocking chair during the duration of the exhibit.

Craters & Freighters, the leader in specialty freight handling, has over 18 years of experience in packing, crating, and shipping high-value, one-of-a-kind items such as antiques and artwork.  Mike Jones, owner of Craters & Freighters Eastern, NE explains their process of handling this priceless piece.

"It all starts with the base of the wood crate.  We use a floating base crate that aids in the protection of the freight inside the crate.  With a floater base, the chair will have a cushioned ride during transport.  We then added interior walls to the base of the crate.  Once the back and side walls were completed, we added the back exterior wall.  Basically, we built a crate within a crate for added protection.  The inside of the internal crate was surrounded by dense foam.  Hinges and clasps were added for easy removal of the chair and so the crate could be reused easily throughout the exhibit’s tour.

Next, the rocking chair was prepared with additional packaging materials including foam and stretch wrap to prevent scratching.  White gloves and a delicate touch were used in handling the chair.  Finally, after packing was completed, the chair was placed inside the crate.  More foam was used underneath the crate to prevent the chair from rocking.  The crate was then closed and ready to begin its historical tour.”

Craters & Freighters of Eastern Nebraska was honored to be a part of this historical moment.  “We thank the Library of Congress and the Union Pacific Museum for the opportunity.”
